'Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips.' Joshua 1:8 NIV
Just like a dedicated gardener who diligently grows seeds until they become strong and healthy plants, God grows our faith throughout our lives.
John 20:31 tells us that there is a reason the Bible exists. God preserved His Word in the Bible so that it could guide us and help our faith grow. Our faith starts to grow when we plant the ideas and promises of God as seeds in our very hearts. Plant the truth about what God is like and how His love results in all the marvellous things around us. Just as water and fertilizers nourish plants, the Word nourishes our faith.
When you are trying to grow plants, you must water them daily. Similarly, you can grow your faith when you commit to reading and learning God’s Word daily. It may be the first thing you do when you wake up or the last thing you read before bedtime. Remember, consistency can help strengthen your faith.Books have been shaping cultures and transforming lives for centuries, and as Christians, we are called to engage deeply with the written word. From the Bible to timeless Christian literature, reading plays a pivotal role in spiritual growth and understanding God’s heart.
According to a study by the Christian Post, "reading scripture is one of the most common practices among Christians".
For young people in Africa, reading isn’t just an academic exercise—it’s a way to discover purpose, build character, and deepen faith. This article explores the importance of reading for Christians, offering practical tips, recommended resources, and insights into how the written word can transform your walk with Christ.
God gave Joshua a big job: conquer the Promised Land and divide it up among the twelve tribes of Israel. He also gave him the key to success: 'This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success' (Joshua 1:8). God didn't command Joshua to seek a spiritual experience or a personal revelation. He told him to meditate on the Scriptures.
Greg Hawkins and Cally Parkinson wrote Move. They wanted to find the key factors for spiritual growth, so they surveyed the people of one thousand churches. Here's what they found: 'Nothing has a greater impact on spiritual growth than reflection on Scripture. If churches could only do one thing to help people at all levels of spiritual maturity grow in their relationship with Christ, their choice is clear. They would inspire, encourage, and equip their people to read the Bible.'
You don't grow in Jesus simply because you're busy in church; it happens automatically when you read and trust God's word. So, engage with your Bible. Meditate on it day and night. Think and rethink on it. Let it be your guide. Make it your go-to book for questions. Let it be the ultimate authority in your life. Peter puts it this way: 'As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby' (1 Peter 2:2 ).
