Being Unique

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.

I love this quote as it tells us that the path we choose or who we want to be in this world which is so complicated with racial, cultural, and religious differences is up to us. It is up to us as individuals to choose and decide who we want to be in this complex society where people try so hard to copy and be someone else as they feel they will be better liked or loved. But I think that is so sad as we need to start feeling happier with who we are and should be proud to show it off. God created each one of us in a very unique way and we need to appreciate and love it with all the quirks.

In a world where racism and multiculturalism are so prominent, I think accepting that we each are unique is a gift. God made each one of us in his own image. He created each person in their own unique way. Our fingerprints are different. In this fast growing world where there is so much of jealousy about another person’s looks, career etc. it is very difficult to stand out. But we all strive to be that one individual who wants to stand out and be unique. I am one such person. I am an Indian, but I am proud of my heritage. I have my uniqueness which stands out even though there are many around me who don’t like it. Life is about enjoying and accepting who you are. I believe I am unique as I do things differently to others. I am not a people pleaser and stand up for my beliefs. I know that does not go very well with many people who might think I am proud. But it’s not pride, but just loving my God given uniqueness and being happy and contended with it.

When I was growing up, I always felt that my skin was too dark, and I wanted to be fair like my other friends in school who were fairer than me. I was so obsessed that I used to try out all the fair and lovely creams that were available in the market. But now when I think back to those days I think, why was I so obsessed with having fair skin. But the best part of it is when I fell in love and got married to my husband Julian, one of the first things he said to me was how beautiful my skin was. I am now so proud of my skin colour and am not ashamed or obsessed with daubing them with fairness cream.

Another thing I was so worried about when I was growing about was my nose. I thought my nose was too big and that all the others around me had a good looking nose. Now when I think back to those things, I think how much of importance I had given to looks when all I had to do was love myself with all my quirks as God created me this way and in a very unique way as he wanted me to stand out amongst all the others. I realise that now, but it was something I had to learn as I grew and matured. Now I am happy with how I look and have accepted that I am unique.

Being unique is a wonderful feeling especially when you think of the world in which we live where so many individuals struggle to be themselves. So, remember whatever flaws or quirks you have be proud of who and what you are as God created you this way for a reason and you are beautiful and unique in this world.

“Don’t dilute yourself for any person or any reason. You are enough! Be unapologetically you.” – Steve Maraboli
